The Cherry Street Players
Since its inception in 1999, the Cherry Street Players has introduced over 350 young people ages 9-17 to the artistic and technical fundamentals of theater. Troupe members each participate in classroom exercises and instruction and offers the students the chance to perform in 1 showcase and 1 main stage production each semester so all participants get a chance to showcase what they’ve learned and experience the excitement of performing live for the community-at-large.
Suzie Cappa Players at the Black Hills Workshop
This group was formed when the first "production" was performed in the spring of 2005 by a company of clients at the Black Hills Workshop. They presented a short, seasonal play for their friends, family and the general community and the group named themselves the Suzie Cappa Players, after the name of the Arts Center at the Black Hills Workshop. Ten participants were chosen by Brad Winter, the Center Coordinator. Several teenage facilitators were also used to cue lines and the play format included a narrator, drawn from the ranks of volunteer actors from the Community Theatre. During the 2005 - 2006 Season, Kristi Thielen, BHCT Education and Outreach Director, directed a Halloween play and taught a series of acting classes. Brad A. Winter and the clients have expressed their desire to continue to develop the "company" and do more theatre programs.
Participants from the Workshop worked with Amy McClure, the Technical Director
at BHCT, painting sets for Baby, Oklahoma, Captain Dangerous and Murder Rides Again. Amy
also worked with them on the construction of a display for the Dahl Arts Center. Their help and
assistance has become something Amy continually looks forward to.
BHCT, in conjunction with the Black Hills Workshop (BHW) and Central High School
Drama Department (CHSDD) staged the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classical musical
Oklahoma! from June 9-11. In preparation for this Kristi Thielen, our former Education
Coordinator, started teaching a six week acting class in January and in April Eric Johnson
offered a six week class in voice to members of BHW. 15 members from the Workshop
were cast in the show and the production proved a great success. The letters and smiles
we received during this endeavor touched many participants in ways they never new possible.
We look forward to the further development of this type of programming, and the
expanded participation of the community-at-large.
