A Note from Instructor, Thom Palm:![]() My first involvement with theatre was in my high school, which had a strong extra-curricular theatre club. I was also involved in the Winston-Salem, NC Community Theater, which is much like the BHCT, while in high school.
During my first two years of college I changed my major from Pre-Law to theatre with my primary interest in lighting. At graduation I had a choice between going on tour with Meatloaf as a roadie, or to the Milwaukee Ballet as their Master Electrician (ME)/ Assistant Lighting Designer (ALD). I chose the Ballet. While at the Ballet I assisted Gilbert Hemsley in a premiere ballet. Soon after I started working with American Reparatory Theatre. While at ART I acted as ALD to such notables as Jennifer Tipton (7 productions), Richard Ridell, James F Ingalls (15 productions), Spencer Moss, Donald Edmond Thomas, and Beni Montressor. I left ART after 7 seasons and after 3 years of freelance work, mostly touring, I accepted an offer to be Asst. Professor at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee within the Professional Theatre Training Program. By the time I left Milwaukee to move to the Black Hills, I had worked professionally on some element of technical theatre in over 200 theatres, 38 states, and 10 countries. My hope with this lighting class is to pass on some of that knowledge, encouraging aspiring lighting designers to try their hand at this illuminating mix of art and craft. |
