Alabama Story
By Kenneth Jones
Director: Bernie McFarling
Assistant Director: Ryan Puffer
As the Civil Rights movement in Montgomery, Alabama in 1959 is brewing, a controversial children’s book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit stirs the passions of a segregationist State Senator and a no-nonsense State Librarian. Meanwhile the reunion of two childhood friends, Joshua and Lily, provides private counterpoint to the public events swirling in the state capital. Inspired by true events, Alabama Story brims with humor, heartbreak, and hope.
BHCT is still seeking actors for the role of Joshua Moore. Interested actors can reach out to merlyn@bhct.org
JOSHUA MOORE-32, upwardly mobile middle-class African American man who left Alabama years ago, settling in the north after serving in the Army. Purposely subtle and suppressed Alabama accent, which becomes pronounced when agitated. He is politically active, aspirational, loyal, kind, worldly, happily married, slow to boil, susceptible to nostalgia without getting lost in it, a disciple of Dr. King.
Regular rehearsals (usually Sundays-Thursdays 6:30pm-9:30pm) will tentatively begin on March 24th.
Performance Dates:
May 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18 at 7:00pm
May 5, 12, 19 at 2:00pm
