Summer Camps 2024
All camps culminate in a Friday showcase; at 10:00 a.m. for the morning camps and at 3:00 p.m. for the afternoon camps.
June 17-21
8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Mask Mania (ages 6-10)
Learn the art of mask making and unlock the stories that your mask and your imagination concoct. Students will have the chance to learn techniques for effective movement when performing with masks.
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 pm. Intro to playwriting (ages 11-14)
Nurturing the voice of the young writer through fun exercises and explorations of key concepts: setting, character, stakes, dramatic question, and more. Note: this camp is limited to 10 students.
July 15-19
8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Build-a-Play Workshop (ages 6-10)
Beginning with simple theatre games and storytelling exercises, students collaborate to build a performance of stories, from the ground up. No scripts, so an ideal camp for performers who are not yet proficient readers.
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Improv Intensive (ages 11-14)
Students are introduced to the building blocks of improvisation: saying yes-and, being honest and having fun! Dozens of short-form games will sharpen listening and collaborative skills.
August 12-16
8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Animal Antics (ages 6-10)
Tall tales, loopy legends, and merry myths all involving animals. Students practice fundamental acting skills and perform a handful of short plays, learning a bit about international cultures as well. That’s edutainment!
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Shakespeare’s Company (ages 11-14)
Campers train and rehearse in the style of the King's Men - with cue scripts, limited rehearsals, and no directors. Campers will bring to life one of Shakespeare's epic works as a collaborative ensemble.
Tuition for all camps is $120, plus tax, a total of $127.44. Some scholarships are available.
Class size is limited to 20 students. Appropriate safety protocols will be in place.
Completed registration forms can be emailed to [email protected] or dropped off at the PACRC daytime Box Office.

Since its inception in 1999, the Cherry Street Players has introduced over 350 young people ages 8-14 to the artistic and technical fundamentals of theater. Students participate in classroom exercises and instruction that culminate in the rehearsal and performance of a fully staged production each semester. All participants get a chance to showcase what they’ve learned and experience the excitement of performing live for the community.
The spring semester usually runs January to April and the fall semester runs September to December. Contact us to be added to the mailing list and get notified of new education programs as they are announced.
If you would like to learn more or join the Cherry Street Players, please call 605-394-2250 or email [email protected].
Sponsored in part by the South Dakota Arts Council, the City of Rapid City, the Allied Arts Fund, Senator Stanford and Mrs. Lynda Adelstein and a special grant from the Morgan Stanley Foundation.
