Greetings to Our Beloved Theatre Community,
With deep regrets, Black Hills Community Theatre needs to inform you that all performances of Roald Dahl's Matilda, slated to open this weekend and play through September 26, have been cancelled. Everyone involved with Black Hills Community Theatre is greatly disappointed and sad that this incredible production cannot be brought to the public. Due to COVID cases within the cast and the uncontrolled spread of the Coronavirus in the community, it was deemed unsafe to continue with public performances.
Matilda involved a cast, orchestra and crew of nearly fifty people with many younger children who are not eligible for vaccination at this time. Cases of COVID within that group, combined with the anticipated audience attracting many younger people, were mitigating factors in the decision to cancel the production.
In speaking with director Kory Yamada she said, "This was a heartbreaking decision that all of us at BHCT agonized over for days. The safety of the cast and crew is, and always has been, our number one priority and as much as we would have loved to bring this amazing production to the stage, the health of our incredibly talented kids is far more important. This is devastating for those 19 kids and 9 adults in the cast as well as the countless others who poured their hearts and souls into this show, but I know for certain it was the right decision. We put together a beautiful show for you, Black Hills, but I guarantee you will see these talented artists on stage again someday."
At this time BHCT is not anticipating rescheduling Matilda in the immediate future. However, since the remainder of BHCT's mainstage season consists of adult casts and plans for increased safety protocols, it is anticipated that we will not have any further season show cancellations. We have programmed a dynamic line up of productions for you and are excited to share them with you!
Ticket buyers and Season Pass Holders are encouraged to contact the Performing Arts Center of Rapid City box office about options for receiving credit for their purchase or full refunds. As a reminder, BHCT is a tax-exempt non-profit and we are in the unfortunate position of having to make decisions that ultimately hurt us financially. We encourage our ticket buyers and theatre loving public to continue supporting us by donating the price of your ticket or applying the price of your ticket to a future production.

BHCT Staff, Board, and the Matilda Production Cast and Crew
Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers who is unloved by her cruel parents. Plus her school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. However, Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!
